Philly Steak Cheese Fries
Ingredients (serves 3-4)
450g thinly sliced steak (flank steak, rump steak, or sirloin steak)
1 tsp garlic salt
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
1 green bell pepper, seeded and thinly sliced
1 onion, thinly sliced
8-10 slices white American cheese (or melted white cheddar, mozzarella, or provolone)
590g frozen waffle fries (McCain Quick Cook)
1 tbsp olive oil
Instructions
1. Cook the fries
Preheat the oven to 220°C (fan-assisted).
Spread the waffle fries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes (or according to package instructions), until crispy and golden brown.
2. Prepare the Steak
Meanwhile, heat a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat with 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
Add the thinly sliced steak and sprinkle with garlic salt and pepper.
Stir-fry quickly until well browned, about 3 to 4 minutes.
Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside.
Reserve 1 tablespoon of the cooking liquid, discarding the rest.
3. Cook the Vegetables
Return the skillet to medium heat and add the reserved liquid.
Add the sliced onion and green pepper.
Stir-fry for 5 to 7 minutes, until the onions are tender and the peppers retain a little crunch.
Remove the vegetables and set aside with the steak.
4. Assemble
In the same skillet (or a casserole dish if it’s not ovenproof), place a layer of hot fries.
Top with 4 slices of cheese.
Add half the steak and vegetables.
Repeat: remaining fries + steak/vegetables + remaining cheese on top.
5. Melt the Cheese
Bake for 5 to 8 minutes, just long enough for the cheese to melt and coat everything well.
For an even meltier touch, broil for 1 to 2 minutes at the end.
Tips and Variations
Add jalapeños for a spicy version.
Substitute hash browns for the waffle fries, or even nachos for a Tex-Mex Philly.
You can also use a mixture of cheeses: cheddar + mozzarella + raclette cheese.
